A Guide to Single and Double-Hung Windows

Single and double-hung windows are by far the most iconic window there is. But what makes them a good window, how are they different, and how do you know which window to go with? Let us explain.

Differences

From a distance, single and double-hung windows look identical. The differences between the two come down to moving parts. The square case that holds the glass is called a sash and both types of windows have two of these. Both types of windows slide vertically. With a single-hung window, the upper sash is permanently fixed while the bottom sash moves. Whereas, with a double-hung window, both sashes can move.

Double-Hung Window Pros

Many prefer double-hung windows for several reasons, but one of the largest benefits to them is that they are easy to clean. Because these windows can tilt in, you can clean the inside and outside from inside your home. This especially comes in handy when your windows are not on a ground level floor. With double-hung windows you also can allow more airflow into your home. And in cases where there are children in the house? You can let air in through the top sash while keeping the bottom sash closed and your kids safe.

Single-Hung Window Pros

Many prefer single-hung windows because they are cheaper than double-hung. It is also believed by many that single-hung windows are not as prone to draftiness as their double-hung counterparts. Of course, all windows are required to meet the same set of standards before appearing on the market, but with use, all materials will begin to deteriorate. The reasoning is that since the upper sash does not move, it retains a tighter seal. In addition, a moving sash cannot be resealed with caulking like a single-hung window can. For these reasons, many regard single-hung windows as being superior in weather resistance.

So, how do you know which window to choose? It all depends on what is most important to you. For simplicity and cost savings, single-hung is the way to go. For easy repair and maintenance, double-hung may be the right choice for you. If you are still not sure, give Innovative Builders a call!
